Let’s put aside the excuse-making and face the facts: you’ve been putting off your dissertation on Macroeconomics and only have two weeks to complete it. While you should be feeling the stress, there’s no reason to panic. You still have plenty of time to do it and do it right, as long as you focus the time you have left.
The first thing you need to do to master writing on a time crunch is get organized. Put a pin on your topic and the length to aim for. As a touchstone, the average Economics dissertation is around 100 -150 pages long. Get your research data together and use it to define your key points, the sub-points, and the conclusion you want to lead up to. Take your first few days to ensure all your information is in one, easily accessible place and that you have a clear thesis map to follow.
You’re on a tight deadline, so it is imperative that you set aside a block of time every day during which you will do nothing except work on your dissertation. Silence your phone, adjust your work availability if you need to, eat a good meal beforehand, and take any other steps to insure you won’t be interrupted or distracted during your writing time.
Make sure to schedule in some downtime as well; don’t force yourself to write until you break down. Take a moment after the dedicated writing block, or in the middle of it if you’ve been going for hours already, to clear your mind and relax.
Nothing slows down writing like trying to generate words and edit them at the same time. Once your outline is in place, you’ll need to spend most of your two weeks just putting words on the pages. Don’t stop to question your facts or phrasing yet, or to fix spelling errors. Turn off your word processor’s error marking if possible so the squiggly red lines won’t distract you. Write until you’ve covered every question and data point in your outline. Ok, now you can go back to clean up your grammar and fix your organization problems.
To help you stay motivated, set milestones and reward yourself with something when you meet them. Just don’t make up rewards that will cut into your writing time.
